This is a nice anecdote regarding a meeting that took place between Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein. Where did the two meet, and what did Charlie Chaplin say to Einstein? read below.
What Did Charlie Chaplin Say to Einstein
We will go straight to the point. As expected, the meeting between the two geniuses led to some thoughtful and deep exchange, that was shared by the Nobel Prize committee on Instagram.
Einstein: ‘What I most admire about your art, is your universality. You don’t say a word, yet the world understands you!’
Chaplin: ‘True. But your glory is even greater! The whole world admires you, even though they don’t understand a word of what you say.’
Background
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. KBE was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film and therefore will always have an important place in the history of mime. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona, the Tramp, and is considered one of the film industry’s most important figures.
Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist, widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest physicists of all time and probably one of the smartest men of his era (and all-time). Einstein is best known for developing the theory of relativity, but he also made important contributions to the development of the theory of quantum mechanics and won the Noble prize for his discoveries of the photoelectric effect.
The two seem to belong to two different worlds, but according to the Nobel Prize committee, it was said that “Charlie Chaplin was the only person in Hollywood Albert Einstein wanted to meet.” In 1931, Dr. Einstein got the opportunity to do so during the premiere of the film City Lights in Los Angeles.
Einstein, still a German citizen at the time, had been traveling in the United States for the first time. The world-famous scientist was at the height of his fame and had already won the Nobel prize, was introduced to Mr. Chaplin at Universal Studios, and then invited to the premiere of ‘City Lights’.
As we said, the two megastars met at Universal Studios and their quick-witted minds hit it off as they took a tour of the studios and had lunch. Charlie Chaplin later wrote about Albert Einstein in his autobiography: “He looked the typical Alpine German in the nicest sense, jovial and friendly.”
