A mime is a form of silent art that involves acting or communicating using only movements, gestures, and facial expressions. A person performing mime – also called a mime – usually uses several elements to make his/her performance memorable. But first, you must create your mime character. Learn how to create classic mime routines with this short clip:

Here is a transcript of it –

I’m Mark Wenzel for Expert Village, we are teaching you how to be a mime. In this segment – how to create a character.

Now it is very simple.

If you have an action, let’s say youe have gone to the covered. You have opened up the coverd, pull it out a bowl, a box of cereal. You put the cereal in, you put the cereal over there. You pour some milk into it, you take a spoon and eat it. That is the action.

Now, if you added a attitude to it. Are you really happy? Is it a wonderful morning? Oh we can not wait until we dive into the bowl of cerea.

Or are you hungover? I can not wait and eating this cereal is going to be noisy when I eat it. I can not stand it.

An attitude makes a difference. All of a sudden you have broken up with your girlfriend. Things are slamming down, it is the same action but it is different because I have this attitude I’m going to eat this cause I’m so mad. That0 is like I’m depressed, oh no, I would take the bowl down. But where is the cereal how would I ever do it. You have added an attitude to that gesture, to that routine and now you have created a character.

In other words, facial expressions are really important when performing classic mime routines because otherwise, your audience will not know how the character is feeling about the events happening in the act. The facial expression could be happy, sad, angry, confused, annoyed, worried, or scared – just not neutral!

By understanding these emotions we understand more about how the character is feeling, and get a better sense of empathy for the actors in the story.
